DESIGN SOLUTIONS AND CHALLENGES DURING THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE OLYMPIC NATIONAL SPORTS COMPLEX IN KYIV

The purpose of the article is to analyze the design features, technological solutions and engineering challenges that arose during the reconstruction of the Olympic National Sports Complex in 1966. The Kyiv complex is one of the most prominent sports facilities in Ukraine and a venue for numerous important competitions. Its building and reconstruction are of considerable interest in terms of the engineering solutions and design approaches used. The study is based on the author's interview with Leonid Dmytriev, the chief engineer of the project, which allows us to reveal little-known facts about the technical aspects of the modernization of this outstanding sports facility. Results. The article covers the history of the stadium's building, starting in 1936, when construction of the 50,000-seat arena began according to the design of architect M. Grechyna. But the main attention was paid to the 1966 reconstruction, which aimed to increase the stadium's capacity to 100,000 visitors by creating a second tier of stands. Research methods: interviews, analysis of textual data, systematization and generalization of information. The engineering problems faced by specialists during the reconstruction and ways to solve them are discussed in detail. In particular, the features of working with heterogeneous soils on the construction site, which required the use of different types of foundations, are analyzed. An innovative approach to the design of prestressed reinforced concrete beams using probabilistic methods to minimize the risk of deformation is presented. Conclusions. The article reveals the significance of the reconstruction of the Olympic National Sports Complex in Kyiv as a significant engineering event, during the construction of which advanced design solutions and technologies were applied. The results of the study are important for expanding knowledge about the history of construction in Ukraine, the development of engineering thought and can be used in the educational process in the training of construction industry specialists, as well as for popularizing the scientifi c and technical achievements of domestic engineers.
