Abstract

Abstract. The article deals with the evolution of the creative approach of artist Ivan Myasoedov, one of the brightest representatives of arts of the early twentieth century in Ukraine. It is investigated what conceptual, stylistic, and technological influences he experienced in the fields of painting, graphics, photography, and architecture. It was found out which of the key figures in the art world were Myasoedov's role models and teachers and also whom he himself influenced as a mentor. The coloristic techniques used by the artist in his works were analyzed. Based on the field survey of the artist's house, it was established technological requirements he put into the design of the space of his studio. This research was conducted during 2020–2022 years. The work relies on the analysis of Myasoedov's works in the collections of Ukrainian museums (Poltava, Berdiansk, Kyiv, Dnipro, and Odesa). Scientific publications dedicated to the artist and his environment were studied. The materials of private archives (photos and text documents) were processed. Ivan Myasoedov's approach to drawing and coloristic underwent a noticeable evolutionary path from the beginning of his studies at the academy in 1907 to his internship in Munich in 1911. The study at the academy resulted in Ivan Myasoedov's diploma work "The Campaign of the Argonauts", which he performed in several stages by creating various options from sketches to large-format. In 1911, he was acquainted with the works of the famous German artist Franz von Stuck, a representative of the Munich Secession. Ivan repeatedly cited the painting and composition techniques of Stuck in his photographs. For Ivan Myasoedov, photography was an independent form of art. A significant part of Myasoedov's photographs was lost during a fire in 1943. Some prints on photographic paper was preserved at the National Art Museum of Ukraine. Studies of sketches and preserved works make it possible to reconstruct the color gamut of lost paintings with high probability, using their monochrome photo reproductions as a basis.
