RESTORATION OF THE ROOF OF SAINT SOPHIA OF KYIV THROUGH PROFESSIONAL COORDINATION UNDER CONDITIONS OF LIMITED ACCESS

Abstract

Purpose of the article – to substantiate a structured model of the preparatory stage of restoration intervention using the example of the roof of Saint Sophia Cathedral, by defining functional links between primary data recording, technical mapping, decision coordination, change protocoling, and internal quality control. The study aims to develop a technologically consistent system suitable for implementation without additional clarifications and compliant with international principles of cultural heritage preservation. Research methods – structural-logical analysis, technical probing, comparison with archival drawings, defect mapping, analysis of coordination tables, change protocols, and digital documentation. Special attention is given to the boundaries of intervention, material compatibility, and the stability of the documentation base. Results – a step-by-step preparation model has been developed, including primary data recording, technical mapping, intervention coordination, creation of a digital archive, and an internal control system. Intervention boundaries have been defined, critical discrepancies between drawings and actual conditions eliminated, technological reversibility and implementation stability ensured. The model demonstrates the feasibility of a controlled approach to restoring complex historical sites, where previously fragmented or situational decisions were applied. Conclusions. The novelty of this study lies in the implementation of a formalized, multi-stage preparation system that has no analogues in current practices of intervention in architectural heritage sites. Its practical relevance is confirmed by the completeness of the documentation base, adaptability to other objects, and compliance with international standards of restoration activity. This system was tested in the restoration of the roof of Saint Sophia of Kyiv, where limited access required precise professional coordination among restorers, museum specialists, and heritage protection authorities.
