ARCHITECTURAL ROLE OF POWER PLANTS IN THE FORMATION OF INDUSTRIAL COMPLEXES OF INTER-WAR UKRAINE (ON THE EXAMPLE OF DNIPROBUD)

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze and rethink the role and influence of industrial development on the formation of urban quarters in the inter-war and post-war reconstruction periods from the architectural and spatial, industrial and ideological aspects using the example of the Dnipro Hydroelectric Power Plant (Dniprobud) in the city of Zaporizhzhia. The research methods: the article uses comparative, analytical and historical methods, as well as urban planning and architectural, and spatial analysis. The research results: the study examines the architectural and urban role of power plants in the process of forming industrial complexes of inter-war Ukraine based on the example of Dniprobud (Dnipro Hydroelectric Power Plant) and analyzes how the design solutions of power plants influenced the planning of industrial hubs and future social cities, in particular the spatial development of Zaporizhzhia. Also, how the architectural form of these industrial structures and their scale served as an ideological representation of the modernization of the inter-war period. Examples are given of the typological, stylistic and technological features of hydropower facilities and their long-term impact on the urban landscape. Conclusions. Power plants of inter-war Ukraine performed a multifunctional role: technical nodes, architectural dominants, urban generators and ideological symbols. Dniprobud as an example demonstrates that the architectural solutions of power structures, combining an engineering function with architectural expressiveness and social integration, had a long-term impact on the spatial organization of the region and the formation of industrial identity.
