HISTORY AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT EVOLUTION OF THE CITY OF BOYARKA WITHIN THE STRUCTURE OF THE KYIV AGGLOMERATION IN THE LATE 19TH AND EARLY 20TH CENTURY

Abstract

Research Objective. The article examines the architectural and figurative expressiveness of the summer town of Boyarkа. Particular attention is paid to the history of the formation of the summer settlement and the nomenclature of buildings. Research Methods. The methodology integrates various scientific tools, including the historical method (examination of archival sources and analysis of historical and contemporary cartography), the morphological method (assessment of the development of architectural forms), and the comparative method (evaluating changes in urban planning and architecture relative to the area’s modern condition) Field surveys and documentation methods (such as photographic recording and schematic measurements) were employed alongside a graph-analytical approach to systematize and visualize the accumulated data. Conclusions. Having analyzed the urban structure of the dacha settlement around Boyarka station, it can be concluded that the arrival of the Kyiv “elite” led to the establishment of the post and telegraph office, a bathhouse and laundry, a barbershop, a network of pharmacies, a sewing workshop, various shops and cafes, a cinema, and a concert hall. The planning of the dacha town around the station was entirely independent and unrelated to the lifestyle of the adjacent Budaiivka. The aesthetic tastes of the Ukrainian intelligentsia fully corresponded to the fashionable trends of the Russian Empire at that time, primarily the Pseudo-Russian style, though Art Nouveau (Modern) buildings also emerged. Today, the preservation of Boyarka’s monuments has become a significant challenge for society. Most dachas are located in the town center and some are privately owned by individuals uninterested in their preservation. Consequently, these unique wooden dachas are being driven to a state of disrepair and destruction.
