PRINCIPLES OF ORGANIZATION OF COMMUNICATION AND RECREATIONAL SPACES IN SETTLEMENTS FOR IDPS

Abstract

Abstract. The settlements of IDPs are often characterized by high density, limited resources and lack of of basic amenities, including recreation areas. However, the provision of places for recreation and communication in these settlements is crucial for the physical and mental well-being of the displaced population. Therefore, the purpose of the research is to determine the principles of organization and placement of communication and recreational spaces in the settl ements of refugees and displaced persons. The research methods are based on the available literature and case studies from different parts of the world, the real experience of building settlements in Ukraine and and international experience. Based on the analysis of scientific and popular sources, as well as design and construction experience, the concept of “communication and recreational space”, which is becoming a necessary social center for for IDPs in temporary places of residence. The article provides an in-depth analysis of existing settlements on the territory of Ukraine in the cities of Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv and Dnipro. The experience of construction in England, France, and Greece is analyzed. The author identifies planning shortcomings and trends that improve the current situation. Most refugee camps are created as “accidental cities” born out of chaos, sometimes built according to a plan, but as a temporary place o f residence. Мain results and conclusions. The principle of the need to create of communication and recreational spaces for groups of residential centers is becoming a fundamental principle in the planning structure of settlements. This principle should be applied instead of a uniform arrangement of housing modules at a proportionate distance. The second principle is the creation of a two-level system of these spaces, which provides a general connection between the main public space and all residential space and all residential cells and their communication and recreational spaces. The principles proposed in the article have been successfully applied in the development of a settlement project in Utrecht, the Netherlands. The project was presented at the international competition “SHIFTING HORIZONS” which held in 2021. The project was awarded the third prize.
