FUNCTIONAL FEATURES OF THE RENOVATION OF UNDERGROUND INDUSTRIAL FACILITIES

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to identify the functional features and benefits of renovating underground industrial facilities, based on a review of similar implemented cases in global practice. Research methods include the analysis of renovation examples where underground industrial structures have been repurposed to meet current social needs. The study applies an evaluation method for the effective use of such facilities and illustrates successful renovation projects. Results demonstrate the importance of addressing post-industrial sites, updating them, and assigning them new value to gain cultural, economic, and other benefits. Programmatic goals that guide the overall concept of renovating degraded industrial areas are identified. The article analyzes the functional diversity of these spaces and their adaptability to contemporary needs. A list of potential renovation directions is provided along with aspects that play a key role in selecting a specific function. Conclusions identify ten primary directions of functional transformation for post-industrial underground spaces: museum and exhibition, tourist and entertainment, infrastructural, scientific, commercial, medical and wellness, sports, religious, agro-cultural, safety. A comparative table is developed to illustrate the correlation of these functions with key criteria: cultural, economic, environmental, safety, acoustic, and interiorrelated aspects. This article may serve as part of broader research into the evolution of underground spaces, particularly from the beginning of the industrial revolutions, which continue to influence global development today.
