PRESERVATION AND REGENERATION OF TRADITIONAL WOODEN BUILDING IN THE KYIV REGION

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to investigate the features of the traditional wooden structure of the suburbs of Kyiv and the possibilities of its preservation based on the generalization of foreign experience. The research method consists of identifying, discussing, analyzing and defining the challenges of preserving the identity and authenticity of traditional historical suburbs with characteristic summer cottages in order to achieve sustainable development. The methodological approach consists of two parts. The first is a brief description of the main features of the wooden structure of summer cottages in the Kyiv region, an analysis of the relationships with the environment and landscape, issues and problems of identity and authenticity, as well as how they can be adapted or rethought in a modern context and concepts. The second is the study of alternative approaches that could reconcile traditional principles with current needs for the protection and revival of the historical urban fabric and the rethinking of preservation from historical architecture to sustainable development. The results of the study are the identification of opportunities for the preservation of traditional carved wooden buildings based on the analysis of foreign and domestic experience. It was established that the configuration and interconnection of suburban residential spaces have a unique feature of creating, preserving and broadcasting spatio-temporal events, that is, signs of identity. It was found that currently there are three main methods for preserving suburban wooden buildings: transferring individual buildings to open-air museums; preserving areas of wooden buildings as separate reserves in the city – in this case, the residential function is usually inferior to the tourist and museum; and, finally, the regeneration of residential formations of wooden buildings in situ, with the preservation of the residential function and characteristic types of spaces, with the active involvement of the community.
