ILLUSTRATIONS TO THE “FOREST SONG” BY LESIA UKRAINKA IN UKRAINIAN BOOK GRAPHICS OF THE SECOND HALF OF THE ХХ CENTURY

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to study, research and highlight the unique works of Ukrainian book graphics of the 20th century, which illustrated the work of the Ukrainian poetess Lesya Ukrainka, the drama extravaganza "Forest Song", as well as the factors that influenced the formation and further development of Ukrainian graphics. During the research, the following research methods were used: art analysis, systematic approach, historical analysis, complex analysis, biographical analysis and generalization method. The obtained results, on the basis of the methods mentioned above, the biographical, historical and art history factors that influenced the unique artistic interpretation of the drama extravaganza "Forest Song" by Ukrainian artists in the second half of the 20th century were investigated. The study analysed the illustrations by Ukrainian artists created in the second half of the twentieth century for the drama-extravaganza “The Forest Song” by Lesia Ukrainka. In the 1970s, Lopukhova's linocuts took an important place in the development of book graphics, as the artist used a lyrical interpretation of the image of nature and the heroine through the line. Myron Levytskyi, whose technique is characterised by schematic and flatness, created one of the first single images of Lukasz, addressing the character's personality as an individual. Almost 20 years later, Sofia Karaffa-Korbut interpreted the inner state of the characters and the change of the plot with hints of colour and small fluctuations of lines.
