UKRAINIAN FINE ART OF THE 1920S–1930S AS THE FIRST MANIFESTATION OF CULTURAL DIPLOMACY BETWEEN UKRAINE AND FRANCE

Abstract

Abstract. The purpose of this article is to study the phenomenon of Ukrainian art in France in the 1920s and 1930s and its impact on cultural relations between these countries. Research methods. The research is based on the historical method and the method of analysis, which made it possible to highlight both general historical and artistic processes that took place during the period under study, as well as to determine the role of visual arts in the cultural diplomacy of Ukraine in France. The results. In the proposed work, attention is paid to the concept of "cultural diplomacy" and its role in international relations. As the first example of national Ukrainian diplomacy, particularly on the territory of France, the activity of the Ukrainian Republican Chapel is partially presented. Special focus is directed to the activities of Ukrainian emigred artists and, to a certain extent, cinematography, as they were the two largest phenomena related to the topic of our work. Conclusions. During the research, we analyzed the activities of Ukrainian artists in France and the exhibition work of individual artists. Thus, the article highlights the active development of Ukrainian art in the studied period both on the territory of Ukraine and in France, and also confirms the inseparable cultural connection between both countries. The significance of our study lies in the complex covered topics, as well as in its role during the further study of cultural relationships between Ukraine and France in different historical periods. The results of the study can also be used as counter-propaganda to pro-Russian narratives, both in Ukraine and in France, as well as within francophone territories. Formats for such counter-propaganda can be lectures, speeches at conferences and in mass media, articles in scientific and popular scientific publications, etc.
